I paused. Suddenly a totally false and insulting article written about me didn't seem bad enough to make me blab my story.
"Go on! Go On!" The reporter urged me.
"No. I don't think so. Go ahead and write your stupid article, I don't care!" I muttered.
"But, you don't understand!" He reasoned.
"I understand perfectly, I just don't care!" I turned my back to him.
There was a moment of silence.
"What if I told you I could make an offer you couldn't refuse?" He said with an oily tone to his voice.
"I don't want to hear it!" I snapped.
"Oh." He chortled. "I think you do. I could give you what you want most... Your freedom."
My knees collapsed slightly but I managed not to fall over.
"You're lying." I spat.
"Hm heh heh heh he. Of course, go ahead and think that. By chance did I tell you my uncle is the chief warden of this prison?" He chuckled a bit more.
"I don't believe you, I don't fall for trusting people anymore. Especially slimeballs like you!" I snarled.
"Nuh-uh-uh..." He taunted. "Wouldn't want to make me angry and lose your ticket out of here would you? Plus..." He shot a sneeky look in my direction. "If you don't tell me for this- price, I'll write that AWFUL article about you anyway." He laughed again. "Wouldn't want that now would we?"
Suppose he really was telling the truth I thought slowly.
"Now, you were saying..." He prompted.
"Alright." I croaked. "You'd better not be lying or by the time I really do get outta here I'll-"
"Relax. I'm being truthful. Now, please, continue." He smiled fakely.
"Well, I must've fallen asleep because when I woke up the wagon was stopped. The blanket that covered us was gone and there was no sign of the driver. Nidorino wasn't awake yet so there was no way he could've taken it off. Oh well- we weren't in jail were we?
'Wake up!' I said to nidorino and shook him.
'Muh?' He grogged.
'Let's get outta here before the wagon guy comes back!' I said urgently to him.
I guess I spoke too soon because I saw a guy walking up the road to the wagon.
'Duck! Pretend you're still asleep!'I whispered.
I didn't get a good look at the kid but he didn't seem to care we were there as he flung his huge sack in the back whistling cheerfully. The wagon shook a bit as he climbed in.
"Yah!" He called to his tauros and we started moving.
Slowly, I peeked up at the guy; it was the trainer from the Poke-center! He couldn't possibly've seen us stealing stuff could he? I sent nidorino and image of what I had seen with a tinge of purple to it (purple signifies worry)Nidorino sent back the same picture to me except the kid was picking his nose. It must've been his way of telling me to calm down, either that, or that was what he saw him doing...I was laughing silently when the wagon lurched suddenly and I banged my head against the floor.
"Owwww" I groaned.
The kid turned around and smiled.
"Oh! You're awake!"
I shifted nervously.
"Um, look, sorry for just hitchn' a ride on you like this. We'll leave now if you want."
"Oh, no, no. Don't worry about it! Everyone needs a traveling buddy."He said back.
What was going on here? No one was this nice to strangers! He must've seen us for sure I thought.
'Quit worrying! Let's just enjoy the ride!' Nidorino said reassuringly.
"So, where are we headed?" I asked the kid.
"Saffron City!"He said with a smile, "Can't wait to see that Silph Building!"
Nidorino flashed the nose picking picture again.
'Sounds like a dork to me!'
'I know...'I muttered under my breath in pokenese.
"What?" The kid asked.
"oh, um..." I glanced at nidorino, "I asked you what your name is!"
"Dustin, what about you?"
I sure wasn't gonna tell him my real name just in case he knew of our theiving.
"You can just call me Azu."I told him.
"Ok, Azu. So, do you have any badges yet?"
I gave him a sarcastic look.
"I just started yesterday, what do you expect?"
"Well, I dunno," He shrugged "I got my first badge on my first day..."
'Liar!'Nidorino nido-ed.
"How old are you?" I questioned him.
"sixteen, but my parents wouldn't let me start my journey until I was thirteen." He answered.
"I fell your pain, I'm fifteen and I just started!" I said to him.
"Man,I feel sorry you! Since you're new at this...I guess you might be needing some guidance with Pokemon huh? I could help you out if you want..."Dustin said slowly.
"No thanks." I sniffed, "I think I understand Pokemon pretty well thank you very much! By the way... did you heal your bayleef like I told you to?"
"Yep, and Lucy's perky as ever now! Thanks for telling me about that. How did you know she was hurt anyway?"
I smiled mischeivously.
"Just a lucky guess I guess...
'Yeah, just a lucky guess!'Nidorino said mockingly.
"what's wrong with him?" Dustin asked and he gestured to nidorino.
"aww, he's just hungry or somethin'"
I smiled hopefully, praying he would treat us to a free lunch.
'What are you talking about Azu?!" Nidorino said, "I'm not hungry, I'm talking about how rediculous this whole situation is!"
I cleared my throat, shot an evil look in niodrino's direction, and sent an image of me and him groging ourselves with the word free flashing underneath of it. Nidorino grinned.
"Why don't we stop up here in Celadon? There's a great restaraunt, plus there's a few things I need to take care of while we're there anyway."
"Great!" I said eagerly.
'You think it's free?' Nidorino asked.
I shrugged and enjoyed the rest of the ride to Celadon. We pulled up to the restaraunt and got out, went inside, and took our seats at a booth. I picked up a menu.
'7 bucks for a hamburger?! Nidorino said in disgust as he peeked over my shoulder at the menu.
What if he wasn't going to pay after all I thought nervously.
"I'll be right back." I told Dustin and nidorino as I stood up and walked hastily out the door. I broke into a run as soon as I was far from their prying eyes and went to the Celdaon Dept. Store.
Time to pawn off my goods!
I sold all items I had no use for like most of my stones except a moon and water stone, and a fluffy pink pokemon sweater all racking in for about $400.00!
Easy money I thought. I ran out of the store and back into the restaraunt hoping I wasn't gone too long and sat down. I sent nidorino the image of a huge dollar sign.
'Kaching!' He grinned.
The waitress had come and I ordered food for the both of us.
'Mmmmmmm, I can't wait!'Nidorino said as he licked his lips.
Dustin eyed us suspiciously.
I smiled back innocently.
"What's wrong?" He asked me.
"What ever do you mean?"
"I was just thinking that, well, you're not saying much at all. But your nidorino sure jabbering a lot...Don't you have a pokeball for him?"
Nidorino growled.
"Actually, I don't have any pokeballs at all..." I said sheepishly.
How could I have forgotten to steal those last night?
"You mean to tell me that you haven't caught your nidorino yet?! I'm impressed Azu, you and him are like best buds and you haven't even captured him yet!"
"I must just be lucky again." I said with a cheezy smile.
"You gotta tell me your secret Azu!"
'Like an idiot like him could ever figure it out! He probably wouldn't even know a pikachu if it jumped up and bit him in the butt!' Nidorino muttered.
I snorted and tried to cover it up by coughing but it didn't work so well.
"What's so funny?" Dustin asked.
"Oh, hum, nothing....Hey look our food's here!" I sad just a tad too suspiciously.
Dustin took his soup from the waitress, began to eat quietly, and didn't ask anymore questions. I hoped I didn't make him feel bad. It looked to me like it was time for a conversation starter.
"So," I began, "What sorts of pokemon do you have? I bet you have close friendships with them too."
His glum mood drifted away as he went on about his pokemon, yeah, on -and on -and on...He obviously loved Pokemon a lot.
"yeah and one time my little wigglytuff..."
'GAWD! If I have to hear about his little wigglytuff one more time I swear I'm gonna hurl!' Nidorino said boredly.
I nudged nidorino and smiled really big at Dustin.
"Oh, how cute..." I said convincingly.
"I know." Dustin said with a grin, "woah, we've been here for three hours! I gotta split for a little while but I'll meet you tomorrow outside of Celadon Hotel Suites so we can keep going to Saffron, ok?"
Then he proceeded to pile a huge wad of money on the table.
"This is for the food and so you can get yourself a hotel room, make sure you tip the waitress well too!"
Then he was gone.
Nidorino gawked at the money.
Who was I kidding? I gawked at the money too!
'That is one loaded kid! I think I like him now!' Nidorino breathed.
We finished our meal, laughing and talking amongst ourselves ignoring the occasional dirty looks we recieved from people eating nearby. Then I left a good amount of cash on the table and we went outside.
'What should we do now?' Nidorino yawned.
'I dunno.' I shrugged.'It's still early. I guess we could head to the Celadon gym for a badge if you're up for it.' I said in Pokemon.
'You bet I'm up for it, poison has a good advantage over grass!'
'Ok then! Let's go!'
we walked to the gym and climbed the steps into the huge, vileplume shaped building. To the left, a couple girls sparayed water over a bunch of giggling bellsprout. To the right, they were holding a pokemon lecture. A fancy spiral staircase next to the reception desk in front of us led up to the battle arena.
"Can I help you?" A girl wearing the gym uniform asked.
"I'm here to battle Erica." I said.
"You're in luck, Erica has no challengers lined up at the moent so there will be no wait. Go on up!"
Nidorino eagerly dashed to the stairs.
'Hey! Wait up!' I yelled after him while trying to keep up.
'I want to show just how good I am!' Nidorino bragged.
Erica was standing at the top waiting to greet us.
"You must be my next challenger, welcome! I hope you don't mind if someone watches our match. " She said kindly.
"Not at all." I smiled.
"Then let's begin!"
She clapped her hands and the lights overs the arena turned on illuminating the grassy field and the stands. A familar black clad figure sat in the bleachers.
"Hi Dustin, what are you doing here?"
"Azu, what are YOU doing here?! Erica's pokemon are really strong! Please, think about it, you only have one pokemon! I don't want to see you lose!" He answered.
"You sure do have a lot of faith in me!"
Erica cocked her head with a faint smile on her face.
"I see you already know my brother."
I shot an amazed look at Dustin.
"Since you only have one pokemon, we'll make this a one on one battle." She said.
We each took our places in the trainer boxes on each side of the field and chose our Pokemon. Mine, of course, was nidorino; Hers was gloom.
'A battle now? I was napping Erica!' Gloom yawned.
'Come on you lttle stinkbag! Let's battle!' Nidorino growled.
'Stink bag?! How dare you?!'
"Use your acid attack gloom!" Erica commanded.
Gloom poured it's acid all over nidorino but it didn't affect him very much.
"Horn attack!" I yelled.
Nidorino jabbed gloom in the petals causing it to slide backwards. It shook it's head and got to it's feet angrilly.
"Sleep powder!" Ercia shouted.
Uh-oh. I had a feeling this might be our downfall. What were we gonna do I thought frantically. With nothing coming to yet I got ready to lose and face humiliation from Dustin...
Then I got an idea. I closed my eyes and concentrated on sending an image of a huge charizard attacking gloom from behind.
Gloom turned around to check if the charizard was really there, but saw nothing but her own confused trainer.
"NOW! Slam attack!" I yelled.
Nidorino bashed gloom face down into the dirt.
"Finish it! Hyper beam!"
Nidorino blasted gloom and that was that.
'How did I do?' Nidorino said with a smirk.
Erica looked a little confused, but she smiled and graciously recalled her smoking gloom.
"If you're the girl Dustin told me about, you are truly as skilled as he says. You deserve this badge, good luck on your journey and I hope I see you again."
I took my badge, thanked Erica, and grinned at Dustin, whose face was red as a magikarp. He shrugged with an embarrassed smile on his face.
Nidorino and I walked back down the stairs and continued out of the gym.
'How about we stop for some ice cream to celebrate?' Nidorino asked.
'I have a better idea.'I said in pokenese.
I led the way to the Celadon Dept. Store ready to spend some major dinero. We went inside and headed straight to the jewelry counter.
'Now,' I began, 'I'm willing to spend a lot of money on one fine collar. The only problem in we need a name to engrave in the name-plate...'
Nidorino looked delighted. 'You mean it?! I coup have a fancy dep purple one to match my spots and it could have pure corsola coral on it?'
I nodded, 'And I'll get a bracelet to match it, like a friendship bracelet. Now let's decide on a good name for you...Spike?'
'No way! what do I look like? A common growlithe or somethin'?
'Vince?'
'Hate it.'
'Mojo?'
'WHAT?!'
'Just kidding, how about AJ?'
'Hey now we're talkin'!'
'You like it?'
'It's much better than Mojo anyway.'
'Great-' "clerk CLERK! I have a very special order...."
We paid for our new jewelry and walked out of the store happily. It was getting late now so we decided it was time to go get our hotel room courtesy of Dustin. We found the hotel easliy since it was definately the tallest building in town with fancy fountains and flowering vines dangling from fine looking balconies. We were about to go inside when I stopped suddenly.
'What's wrong?' AJ asked.
My insides felt cold, how could I've been so stupid!
I gulped, 'I spent all our money!'
'So let's go return the jewelry!' Aj said calmly.
'I don't think we can do that for special orders like this!' I cried.
I sat down on a nearby bench and burried my head in my hands. 'I guess we could just camp out and meet Dustin here in the morning so he won't notice...'
'Or....' AJ began slyly, 'We could pull off another heist!'
'AJ! NO!' I scolded.
'Azu, think about it! We could hit the game corner and split! It'll be great!'
'AJ, that was just a one time thing, plus I think the people at the game corner will miss their money anyway!'
'Fine then I'll go there by myself so I can get the money by myself and have a nice comforatble hotel room by myself!'
'They don't let pokemon get hotel rooms AJ...'
'Exactly why you should come along!'
With that he ran off down the darkening street toward the game corner.
'Come back!' I yelled.
Once again I found myself going after him. When I got there, he had alreday dissapeared into a vent on the side of the building leading inside.
'AJ!' I whispered into the vent.
No answer.
I sighed, scooted myself into the cold metal vent, and crawled along to the end. I peered down into a dark room where AJ sat waiting.
'I knew you would come!' He whispered.
I dropped down into the room, grabbed the nearest coin case and began shoveling money into it. Aj had his ear to the door listening for anyone who might be coming. I noticed a security camera dangling limply from the wall all busted up, AJ sure knows what he's doing I thought.
'Ok, it's full, let's get outta here!'
I gave AJ a leg up into the vent and climbed in after him.
'Hurry!' I whispered.
When we finally made it out, I covered my hands with my sleeves and carefully fit the vent cover back in place so I wouldn't leave any fingerprints. Then AJ and I took off running into the night. We kept going until we reached the edge of the forest, there we decided it was safe to count our cash supply; my face fell.
'AJ......This isn't money!' I cried.
"what?! w-w-what're you talking about?!" AJ stammered.
'These,' I said scooping up a handful of coins,'are game corner game coins! We couldn't buy a single thing with these, except maybe a prize!'
AJ shrugged. 'So let's go get one eh?'
'AJ!' I growled. 'You don't seemed to understand that we could get busted, for stealing, FAKE, MONEY!!!!'
'MIght as well make the best of it! You could get an eevee with those coins!'
My anger subsided a little. I could use another pokemon...
'Let's go..' I muttered. AJ grinned cheezily. I sighed and we trudged off to the game corner. I went inside and purchased my eevee while trying to remain inconspicuous. I looked to the left and right and wandered back to the woods with AJ. We set up a simple camp and cracked open a can of spaghetti-os. Aaaaah, the dinner of champions! After a few moments of boredom I decided to let out my new eevee so we could get to know each other. I let it out and gasped. It wasn't just an eeevee, it was a shiny eeevee! It's brown fur had almost gold highlights to it and it's eyes were a twinkling light lavender.
'What are you staring at?' She said.
'Uh, hi. I'm Azu and this-'
'Woah. You can speak pokemon?! I feel almost priveledged.' She grinned. 'Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Barbie; beautiful, brilliant, and brown. Um, what were you saying now?''
'Oh, I'm Azu, and this is AJ' I motioned to him at my side. Aj nodded politely.
'Have you thought about what you're going to evolve me into yet?' Barbie asked as she bent over to scratch her ear with her foot.
'Well, I wasn't exactly planning to evolve you right away. I was going to give you some training as an eevee first.'
'No way! Whay would I want to do that! It would be such a waste of time. I want to evolve now! COme on! choose one! suprise me!' She said eagerly.
'Close your eyes..' I said as I reached into my back for the only stone I saved that would actually work on her. The water stone. I gently touched it to Barbie's head and stepped back. She began to glow and get bigger. Her tail and her legs grew longer and she gained many fins, not to mention her brown with gold highlight fur turned light blue with silver highlights Barbie was now a beautiful shiny vaporoen.
'Wow! Good choice!' She said marveling at her new form. 'You know, for the longest time I thought noone would buy me and I'd be stuck in that Game corner forever! I'm really glad you're my new trainer Azu.'
'And I'm glad you're my new pokemon. Now we'd better get some sleep- we have to get up early tomorrow.'
'Why?' Asked Barbie.
'It's a long story, get to bed.' AJ mumbled with his eyes closed.
